What it is

Botox and Dysport are prescription injections of a purified protein that temporarily relaxes the small facial muscles that crease the skin.

At Blue Harbor Medical & Aesthetics, the most common treatment areas are forehead lines, frown lines between the brows and crow’s feet. The appointment takes about 15 minutes. Results appear over 3 to 14 days and last about 3 to 4 months.

Why it helps

Lines from expression form because the same muscles fold the skin thousands of times a day. Relaxing those muscles lets the skin smooth out, and it stops the crease from being etched deeper.

The goal is a face that still moves and looks rested. Nobody should be able to tell, apart from wondering if you slept well.

Benefits

  • Softer forehead lines, frown lines and crow’s feet.
  • Prevention of deeper, permanent creases with regular treatment.
  • A quick visit with no real downtime.
  • Results that wear off on their own, so nothing is permanent.
  • Decades of safety data behind it.

Risks and side effects

  • Common: small bumps, redness or bruising at injection sites, and a mild headache for a day or two.
  • Eyelid or brow droop. This is uncommon and temporary, and usually resolves within weeks.
  • Uneven results or a heavy feeling in the brow, which can often be adjusted at a follow-up.
  • Dry eyes or a change in smile, depending on the area treated.
  • Rare: allergic reaction, or spread of the toxin’s effect beyond the treated area, causing weakness or trouble swallowing or breathing. Seek medical care right away if this happens.

Who should wait or skip it

These injections are not given during pregnancy or breastfeeding, over a skin infection, or to people with certain nerve and muscle conditions such as myasthenia gravis. Tell us about blood thinners and any previous reaction to a botulinum toxin product.
