Hair Restoration in Maine

Hair loss treatment at Blue Harbor Medical & Aesthetics is a medical plan built around the cause of your thinning, combining an evaluation, proven medications and scalp microneedling with exosomes.

  • Evaluation. History, scalp exam and, where indicated, labs such as thyroid and iron levels.
  • Medication. Options may include topical or oral minoxidil, finasteride for men, and spironolactone for women.
  • Scalp microneedling with exosomes. Fine needles create tiny channels in the scalp, and an exosome product is applied topically.
  • Hormone and nutrition review, especially during menopause or rapid weight loss.

Why it helps

Hair thins for different reasons, including genetics, hormones, stress, low iron, thyroid problems and rapid weight loss, and each cause responds to a different treatment. Finding the cause first avoids months spent on products that could never have worked.

Microneedling increases blood flow and triggers a healing response around the follicle, and studies show it improves results when added to minoxidil.

Medications we prescribe

The right medication depends on the type of hair loss, your sex, your health history and whether pregnancy is possible.

Medication How it works Usually for
Topical minoxidil Lengthens the growth phase of the hair cycle Men and women with thinning
Low-dose oral minoxidil Same effect as topical, taken as a pill. Used off-label Patients who dislike or do not respond to the topical form
Finasteride Blocks the hormone that shrinks follicles in male pattern hair loss Men
Spironolactone Blocks the effect of androgens on the follicle. Used off-label Women with hormonal pattern thinning
Iron, vitamin D or thyroid treatment Corrects a deficiency or condition that is causing shedding Anyone whose labs show a problem

What the program costs

The hair restoration program is $275 a month.

The monthly fee covers:

  • Your medical evaluation
  • Follow-up visits
  • Two scalp microneedling sessions
  • A red light therapy system

Billed separately:

  • Lab work. Billed through your insurance, or offered at our cost with no markup.
  • Exosomes or PRP. These can be added to a microneedling session for an additional fee.
  • Medications. These are often covered by insurance and billed through your pharmacy benefit.

We go over any added costs with you before they happen.

Benefits

  • Slows or stops further loss, which is the most realistic first goal.
  • Regrowth and thicker hairs for many patients, usually visible after 3 to 6 months.
  • Treats reversible causes, such as low iron or thyroid disease, that products alone miss.
  • One practice managing hair alongside hormones and weight, which often overlap.

Risks and side effects

  • Minoxidil: temporary shedding in the first weeks, scalp irritation and unwanted facial hair. The oral form can cause fluid retention, a fast heartbeat or lightheadedness.
  • Finasteride: reduced libido or erectile changes in a small percentage of men. It must not be taken or handled by women who are or may become pregnant.
  • Spironolactone: not safe in pregnancy, and can cause irregular periods, lower blood pressure and higher potassium.
  • Scalp microneedling: redness, tenderness and pinpoint bleeding for a day or two. Infection is rare.
  • Exosomes: these are topical cosmetic products, not FDA-approved drugs, and the research on them is still early.
  • Results stop when treatment stops. Genetic hair loss needs ongoing care, and scarring types of hair loss may need a dermatology referral.

Frequently asked questions

How long before I see results?

Expect 3 to 6 months before visible change and about 12 months for the full effect. Hair grows slowly, and anyone who promises faster is selling something.

Will my hair shed more at first?

It can. Minoxidil often causes extra shedding in the first weeks as old hairs make way for new growth. It is temporary and usually a sign the medication is working.

Do you treat hair loss in women?

Yes. Women make up a large share of our hair loss patients, and thinning around menopause is one of the most common reasons they come in.

I am losing hair on a weight loss medication. Is it permanent?

Usually not. Rapid weight loss can push hairs into a resting phase and cause shedding a few months later. It typically recovers within 6 to 12 months, and enough protein and iron help.

What does scalp microneedling feel like?

The scalp is numbed first, and most patients describe pressure and mild scratching. Expect redness and tenderness for a day or two.

Do I have to keep up treatment forever?

For genetic hair loss, yes. Results last as long as treatment continues. Shedding from a correctable cause, such as low iron or weight loss, often resolves once the cause is treated.

How much does hair loss treatment cost?

The program is $275 a month. That covers your evaluation, follow-up visits, two scalp microneedling sessions and a red light therapy system. Labs, medications, and exosomes or PRP are separate, and labs and medications are often covered by insurance.

Can I use what I already get online?

Bring it with you. We will review it and tell you honestly whether it suits your type of hair loss.
