What it is

Microneedling uses a medical device with very fine needles to make thousands of controlled micro-channels in the skin, and at Blue Harbor Medical & Aesthetics we pair it with a topical exosome product on the face or scalp.

A numbing cream goes on first. Treatment takes about 30 to 45 minutes, and most patients do a series of three or more sessions spaced about a month apart.

Why it helps

The tiny injuries trigger your skin’s own repair process, which builds new collagen and elastin over the following weeks. The skin heals smoother and firmer without the heat of a laser.

The open channels also let topical products reach deeper than they can on intact skin, which is the reason exosomes are applied during treatment.

Benefits

  • Smoother texture and smaller-looking pores.
  • Softer fine lines and acne scars.
  • More even tone and a healthier look overall.
  • Safe for a wide range of skin tones, with a lower pigment risk than many lasers.
  • Short downtime, usually 1 to 3 days of redness.
  • On the scalp, support for a hair loss treatment plan.

Risks and side effects

  • Expected: redness, mild swelling, tightness and a sunburned feeling for 1 to 3 days. Pinpoint bleeding during treatment is normal.
  • Less common: bruising, dryness and flaking, or a temporary acne flare.
  • Cold sores can be reactivated. Tell us if you get them, so we can prescribe a preventive antiviral.
  • Uncommon: infection, dark marks after healing, or a skin reaction to a product applied during treatment.
  • Exosomes are topical cosmetic products, not FDA-approved drugs, and the research on them is still early.

Who should wait or skip it

Microneedling is not done over active acne breakouts, skin infections, eczema or psoriasis flares, or recently sunburned skin. Let us know if you are pregnant, have taken isotretinoin recently, form keloid scars or take blood thinners.
